Williams scores hat-trick in Qatar Open

Sunday6/3/2011March, 2011
Max Williams of England completed a fine hat-trick by winning the Qatar Open golf tournament for the third straight year at Doha Golf Club yesterday.
The 21-year-old Surrey-based amateur aggregated 226 over three rounds to defeat compatriots Joshua White and Curtis Griffiths who were second and third respectively on 230 gross. Hamad Mubarak claimed fourth spot with 232.

This year’s success for Williams came relatively easily, though. In 2009, as a 19-year-old, Williams had won the title after a sudden-death playoff with countryman Steven Brown. He needed a sudden-death playoff again last year when he prevailed over Surrey colleague Alex Christie.

“It feels great to win the tournament for the third consecutive time,” Williams said, who was rewarded with a spot in the Qatar Masters in 2009 and 2010. But this time scheduling problems meant the Qatar Open was held after the Masters.
The amateur character of the field can be gauged from the fact that none of the golfers managed a sub-par score over the three rounds.

The best score shot in the event was 72, by Bahraini Hamad Mubarak in the second round, and by Saudi Khalid Attieh yesterday in the third and final round. The first day’s best score was three over-par 75 by Austria’s Andreas Wieser.
