His Excellency Sheikh Jooan bin Hamad Al Thani, the 15th Asian Games Torch Relay Ambassador, combined on Wednesday 11 October 2006 the Doha Asian Games Flame with the Asian Games Eternal Flame in the presence officials from the Asian Olympic Council and personalities from India’s sports and arts scenes.
India’s most celebrated athletes, Milkha Singh and PT Usha, joined other famous athletes to carry the Doha 2006 Asian Games Flame as it started its journey in New Delhi on Wednesday 11.
Usha and Singh joined some of India’s finest athletes to carry the Flame through the streets of New Delhi, a day after the Doha Flame arrived in the city by special ‘Flame Plane’. The 15th Asian Games Flame be combined with the Eternal Flame of the Asian Games during a ceremony at the National Stadium.
Milkha Singh broke the Olympic record for the 400 meter run at the 1960 Rome Olympic Games. He ran the race barefoot. His timing of 45.6 seconds was also a national record that stood for 38 years!
In the 1958 Asian Games, Milkha won gold in both the 200 m and the 400 m. He won the 400 m gold in the 1962 Asian Games as well, whereas PT Usha has won 101 international medals during her career.
The Doha 2006 Torch Relay will spend 55 days travelling more than 50,000 kilometres visiting 15 countries and regions in Asia. The Relay culminates with the lighting of the Cauldron at Khalifa Stadium in Doha on 1 December at the opening of the 15th Asian Games. |
