Seals thrill and spill to delightful squeals

Friday18/3/2011March
A quartet of Siberian seals from the Arctic Ocean thrilled visitors yesterday in a fun-packed “Seal Show” at the ongoing Qatar Marine Festival (QMF) at the Katara.

Organisers of the show believe that seeing nature up close in the event stimulates the mind, especially in children, and raises awareness of environmental issues such as the habitat of the animals, the threats they face and the impact of climate change on the planet’s fragile ecosystems.

The new addition to the QMF and a first of its kind for the Middle East, the show really sustained the attention of the audience, who kept applauding throughout despite the cold weather condition.

The fish-loving sea animals, comprising two male seals Monik and Stepa and one of the two female sea lions Sabrina and Lapunya, showcased their six-hour daily training by performing tricks and acts to the admiration of the audience.

These sea creatures consume up to 5kg of fish daily.

Apart from jumping for the rings, balancing acts, balloon and whistle blowing, sleeping and rolling on the floor, the seals, directed by their trainers, performed a series of well-rehearsed stunts and tricks.

They also danced to Arabic, Russian and Siberian songs as well as “rock n roll”.

Commenting about the show, the Marine Festival Organising Committee general manager Hamad al-Tamimi said: “The festival is packed with things to see and do but the performing seals are a little bit special.

“We’re really pleased to have got them to Qatar as nothing like this has ever been seen in the desert. What makes the seals show such a perfect ‘fit’ for QMF is that it combines entertainment with education.

“People can see the seals at work and play but also learn all about the animals at the same time.”

The quartet of Siberian seals will be performing at the QMF twice-nightly everyday at 6pm and 9.45pm until the end of the Festival on March 26.

There is a limit of 250 tickets for each show. Tickets are free but must be collected from the information booth beforehand.

A carnival will be held at the festival venue this evening as part of the programme. The carnival will begin at 6pm.

Apart from the seal show, audience also got a glimpse of a water ballet act.
